by Sharn SomasiriInner child work is often misunderstood. Many people imagine it as revisiting childhood memories or engaging in abstract visualisations. In reality, healing the inner child is one of the most powerful, neuroscience-backed ways to transform emotional patterns that have been repeating for decades.
The “inner child” refers to the part of your nervous system that still holds the emotional imprint of past experiences. These imprints are stored not only in memory, but also in the body, in the limbic system, in somatic sensations, and in the unconscious parts of the mind that shape beliefs, reactions and relational patterns.
When childhood needs for safety, validation, protection or emotional connection go unmet, those experiences don’t simply disappear. They become embedded in the system as unresolved emotional states. As adults, those wounded parts show up as anxiety, hyper-vigilance, people-pleasing, emotional withdrawal, perfectionism, avoidance, fear of abandonment, or difficulty trusting others.
These patterns are not adult decisions, they are childhood wounds expressing themselves through an adult body.
Inner child healing works because it supports emotional memory re-consolidation, a process where old emotional associations are updated with new experiences of safety and support. When the younger part finally receives what it needed connection, reassurance, protection, permission, love the old emotional pathway dissolves and a new one forms.
This isn’t just emotional, it’s neurological.
The brain literally rewires.
Clients often describe profound shifts: feeling calmer without effort, responding instead of reacting, trusting themselves more easily, feeling grounded rather than overwhelmed, and experiencing relationships from a place of security rather than fear.
Inner child work doesn’t erase the past.
It changes how the past lives in you.
It gives the younger part of you what it never had, allowing the adult you to move forward freely, without carrying old pain into every decision, relationship or emotional moment.
When the inner child heals, the whole system heals, safety increases, emotional stability returns, and life becomes clearer, lighter and far more aligned.
