How do I trust my own judgement when I’m new to leading?

When you are new to leading, every decision can feel like a test you might fail. Should I have said that? Was that the right call? Should I check with someone first? You find yourself gathering opinions, seeking reassurance, and quietly worrying that you do not have enough experience to trust yourself yet.

If that is you, first, this is completely normal. Nobody hands you a fully formed sense of judgement on your first day. And you are not supposed to have all the answers yet. But here is the part that surprised me: the way you build good judgement is not by waiting until you feel ready. It is by using the judgement you already have, a little at a time.

There is a trap worth naming. When a decision feels hard, the instinct is to reach for more: more opinions, more advice, more reassurance. It feels responsible. But more input often does not bring clarity. It drowns out the one voice you most need to hear, which is your own. Clarity does not usually come from a fuller inbox. It comes from a bit of quiet.

A few things to try:

You do not have to get this perfect. Start where you are.

Give yourself ten minutes before you decide, or before you ask someone else. Not to panic, just to think.

Ask yourself first: what do I actually think here? Answer that before you collect other people’s views. You will often find you already have a sense of the right direction.

Notice whose voice is whose. Some of the pressure you feel belongs to you, and some belongs to other people’s expectations. Separating them makes the decision lighter.

Make the call, then watch what happens. Judgement is a muscle. Each decision, and each honest look back at how it went, makes the next one steadier.

And know that changing your mind with new information is not weakness. It is exactly what good judgement looks like.

You almost certainly have more judgement than you are giving yourself credit for. The doubt is not proof you cannot do this. It is usually just the feeling of doing something new, before it becomes familiar.

If leading with more clarity and confidence is something you would like support with I can help.
