by Zoë HughesAfter working through resistance, I've recently re-learnt the lesson that tapping into my creativity makes me feel amazing: on top of the world!
Why was it that this feeling alone hadn't been enough to keep the creativity habit flowing and consistent? This got me thinking, why is it that something so positive can be so difficult to do?
A thought that has stuck with me is that it takes COURAGE to be creative...
--> Creativity allows us to express ourself. We transfer an internal ‘something’ into something outside of us which can be shared with others.
--> Bringing something new into the world is a powerful and cathartic process, one which we often learn about and refine as we go through the creation journey.
--> There is vulnerability in creating, as we bring to light parts of ourself that are suddenly more open to be seen, and to be judged (whether it be other's judgement or our own!)
Avoiding discomfort is a way we keep ourself safe in the moment, but it can lead to stagnation and limited growth. Leaning into discomfort allows us to find and stretch our edge. I believe this temporary discomfort is worth facing for the discovery of the next step.
It takes patience and kindness to keep trying and experimenting. In practice we discover an important mindset lens: we remain curious and childlike for what will come through. Creativity is a continuous evolution. Like a muscle, the more we practice the more we learn, the more natural it feels and the more flow we find.
Something to ponder:
--> Where am I holding back from being creative?
--> Where I am delaying or restricting my creative power?
