HAPPINESS – WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
Alan Watts in his book : “The Way of Happiness” (1940), describes Happiness as “the way of acceptance”. Alan Watts is one of the most influential philosophers of his generation.
According to Watts, while, deep down, most people think that happiness comes from having or doing something, he believes that “authentic happiness comes from embracing life as a whole in all its contradictions and paradoxes, an attitude that he calls the “way of acceptance”.
Watts demonstrates that happiness comes from accepting both the outer world around us and the inner world inside us — the unconscious mind, with its irrational desires, lurking beyond the awareness of the ego.
If Happiness is the way of acceptance, what can you do today to “embrace life as a whole in all its contradictions and paradoxes?”
If you do not want to “accept” your world as it is, what are you planning to do about it?
In my opinion, the first place to begin to create the world that would make you happier, is to first accept what you currently have with deep gratitude. That means looking upon all your circumstances – good, bad, and ugly – as God’s gifts and blessings, His way of challenging you to be really creative – because He sees You as a “Spark of Himself” – so, you are CAPABLE of changing things within your control for the better.
If you don’t believe in God or the Universe, fine, replace It with whatever appeals to you.
My point here is: Let’s accept our circumstances, gratefully. Then using our creativity, let’s change what we can, as soon as we can – for the better.
