by Lyndsey O'Connor10 reasons people leave their jobs… and it’s not always about the money.
We often hear that people leave because they’ve been offered a better salary.
But in my experience, the decision to leave is often much more complicated.
Here are 10 of the biggest reasons people decide it’s time to move on:
1?? They don’t feel valued
When hard work goes unnoticed for too long, motivation can disappear.
2?? Poor management or leadership
People don’t necessarily leave companies. Sometimes, they leave managers.
3?? No opportunities to grow
Feeling stuck, overlooked or unable to progress can be incredibly frustrating.
4?? Burnout and overwhelm
Constant pressure, unrealistic workloads and never switching off eventually take their toll.
5?? Lack of purpose
If you no longer understand why your work matters, it can become difficult to stay motivated.
6?? A toxic workplace culture
Poor communication, office politics, conflict or a lack of psychological safety can make work exhausting.
7?? Poor work-life balance
When work consistently takes over your life, something eventually has to change.
8?? They’ve outgrown the role
Sometimes you simply become a different person from the one who accepted the job a few years ago.
9?? Their values no longer align
What once felt right may no longer fit who you are or what matters to you.
???? They’ve simply had enough
Sometimes there isn't one huge event. It's the accumulation of lots of little things until one day you think:
"I can't do this anymore."
And here's the interesting part…
Leaving isn't always the answer.
Sometimes the answer is a difficult conversation.
Sometimes it's setting boundaries.
Sometimes it's asking for change.
Sometimes it's recognising that you need a new challenge.
And sometimes… leaving really is the right decision.
The important thing is understanding why you want to leave before you make the decision.
Because there’s a big difference between running away from something and moving towards something.
???? If you're currently thinking about leaving your job, ask yourself:
“If nothing changed in my current role over the next 12 months, how would I feel?”
That answer might tell you more than you think.
?? And if this resonates with you and you’re ready to take some meaningful steps towards making a change, I’d love to hear from you.
